When should my child first visit the dentist?
We recommend bringing your child for their first visit as early as possible — ideally when their first milk teeth appear, or even before. Early visits are informal and gentle, designed simply to introduce the practice and help your child feel at home. The earlier they start, the more confident they will grow to be.
How can I help my child feel less nervous about the dentist?
Talk positively about dental visits at home, avoid sharing your own anxieties in front of your child, and remind them that the team here is friendly and kind. Bringing them along to your own appointments first so they can simply observe can also help significantly. Our team is experienced at putting nervous children at ease.
What are fissure sealants and does my child need them?
Fissure sealants are thin protective coatings applied to the biting surfaces of the back teeth, filling in the grooves where plaque and food particles tend to collect. They are a very effective preventive measure and are particularly beneficial for children. Your dentist will let you know if they are appropriate for your child.
At what age should my child start brushing their teeth?
You should begin cleaning your baby's teeth as soon as the first tooth appears, using a small, soft toothbrush and a smear of fluoride toothpaste. As children grow, they will need help and supervision with brushing until around the age of seven or eight, when most have the dexterity to do it effectively themselves.
What should I do if my child knocks out a tooth?
If a permanent (adult) tooth is knocked out, contact us immediately — time is critical. Keep the tooth moist by placing it in milk or the child's own saliva and bring it to the practice as soon as possible. Do not attempt to re-implant a knocked-out baby tooth. Call us and we will advise you on the best course of action.
